Music

My first exposure to music was my Dad’s records, he had a good collection, that I now have, and he had a really nice stereo system (that I am slowly getting and repairing as he finds it in storage). I loved listening to Cat Stevens, Neil Young, and Bob Dylan.

Music has always come with a story with my Dad, while we listened to his records he would tell stories he’d read about the song or artist, or about the concert he went to, or about the day he bought the album, ect.

I became his records caretaker this Thanksgiving. He called me almost every day for weeks to tell me about albums he thought of, or that I sent him a photo of. Daniel and I took all the records and entered them into a spreadsheet with all the information we collected about each of his records, he seemed to really appreciate it. I've asked him to start adding his stories to each records notes.

I loved Cat Stevens first I think. Unless you count Disco Duck, that was a great record too. I remember getting excited in church when my parents started going when I was in late elementary school because the songbook had “Morning has Broken” by Cat Stevens, and that shit was from my favorite record.

My first concert would have been some Christian concert, because after my parents started going to church they got REALLY into it, and that’s the only music we could listen to in the house. Cat Stevens, Bob Dylan, and Neil Young didn’t count.

My best concert… now that I’m lucky enough to live within walking distance of most of Music City’s best concert venues, it’s hard to choose one, so it’s gonna be a list, in no particular order:

  • Cat Stevens

    at The Ryman

  • Ben Folds

Paper Airplane Tour at The Ryman

  • Neil Young

at the Ascend from my porch

  • Fiona Apple

at the Ryman (but the audience was horrible)

  • Rufus Wainwright

    at The Ryman

  • Pixies

    at The Ryman

The Ryman is my all time favorite venue btw.
