It makes me proud to say I'm somebody else now.
January starts off strong with Daði Freyr's Somebody Else Now. This song is upbeat, quirky, and fun as hell. On top of that, the message speaks to me deeply. For years, my personal hopes (prayers if you want to call them that) have been "to be a better person". How can you become better if you aren't changing? It makes me proud to say I'm somebody else now. Thanks for those words, Daði.
The playlist pretty much builds out from there. Leaning into the quirky fun, we go straight into one of my new favorite songs "Inexplicable" by The Correspondents. Bouncy flutes and a strong drumline back a pop song that managed to work in the word "inexplicably" several times very naturally. Again, a powerful message that speaks to me. It's about reality; seeing it clearly and dealing with what you see rather than what you feel. Personal power/powerlessness. Yet somehow it's also so catchy.
The quirk carries throughout. We have several songs from Eurovision winners (Daði included) and probably at least a few of Tik Tok's songs of the week. There's The Roop, Netta, Apashe, Sofi Tukker, etc, etc, etc.
Toward the end of the month, we started adding music recommended by our maestro de España. We found some awesome Spanish pop that rounds out January. I look forward to being immersed in cultura de España, incluyendo canciones populares.
