May 1st is extra special for us—it’s not only our anniversary but also the day we share with our dear friends, Ryan & Jo. This year, our Italian escape became a joint celebration of love, friendship, and a treasure trove of memories. We reunited with the Mullenixes—who hold a very special place in our hearts, having celebrated their 14th anniversary while we marked our 8th. (Fun fact: they even joined us at our wedding, and I got them an anniversary cake as a little thank-you for spending their 6th anniversary with us on that magical day!)
Our base for the long weekend was Montecatini Terme, a gem that’s been celebrated as one of the "Great Spa Towns of Europe" thanks to its famous mineral springs and stunning spa architecture. The town’s rich history dates back to Roman times, and its charm is palpable in every corner—from the elegant thermal baths to the narrow, winding streets that whisper stories of bygone eras.
One of the highlights was finally checking out the upper town cable car—the historic Funicolare di Montecatini! Open and ready for adventure this time around, it whisked us from the city to Montecatini Alto along a scenic, steep route (with inclines ranging from 16% to nearly 39%!). After our ride, we strolled through the town soaking in food, history, and a few playful moments that made us forget to snap as many photos as we should have. (Oops—but sometimes the best memories are the ones you keep only in your heart!)
No trip to Italy would be complete without indulging in amazing food, and this anniversary getaway was no exception. We feasted on delectable dishes that celebrated the flavors of Italy, and every meal was a reminder of how food brings people together. Sharing laughs, stories, and bites of culinary delight with our amazing friends felt like the perfect recipe for a memorable celebration.
Revisiting the same cozy spot we stayed at in November with John & Shauna added a familiar, comforting touch to our adventures—a reminder of past journeys and the promise of many more to come. From the fun cable car rides to the museum strolls and epicurean delights, our long weekend in Montecatini Terme was a heartwarming blend of history, laughter, and love.
Here’s to anniversaries celebrated in beautiful Italy, to friends who feel like family, and to adventures that remind us how lucky we are to be living life to the fullest. Until our next chapter of wanderlust and joy—grazie, Italy!
