Luxembourg | A short stop on our journey

Luxembourg was a delightful, whirlwind adventure—a brief yet captivating peek into a city where history meets modern charm.

We checked into our hotel located just outside downtown. One sunny afternoon, we hopped in the car and drove downtown to sample what Luxembourg City had to offer. The plan was simple: a quick trip for a great lunch and a little exploration of the city center’s beauty. And wow, did it deliver! The lunch was absolutely scrumptious, and the vibrant, historic heart of the city left us in awe.

Though our stay was short, every moment felt enriched by the stunning architecture and the cosmopolitan buzz. The blend of cultures and modernity, alongside its deep historical roots, makes the city an ever-evolving tapestry of stories.

Did you know that the first settlements in the area date all the way back to the Paleolithic Age? Fast forward a bit, and before the Romans arrived, the region was home to the Treveri, a Celtic tribe that roamed the land during the 2nd century. Then came the transformative era between 58 and 51 BC, when Julius Caesar’s legions ushered the area into 450 years of Roman rule—a legacy that shaped much of the region’s early character.

Over the centuries, Luxembourg fell under the sway of various countries. By the 13th century, its wealth had grown so impressively that the Count of Luxembourg, Henry VII, ascended to the role of Holy Roman Emperor. For about 130 years, Luxembourg and Austria sparred over who should hold the reins of the Roman Empire—a rivalry that ended when the Luxembourg line petered out, setting the stage for 400 years of outside rule.

More recently, Luxembourg has navigated the turbulent tides of the 20th century, having been occupied by Germany during both World Wars. Yet, the resilient spirit of the nation shone through as it reinvented itself by joining NATO as a founding member—a notable pivot from its long-held constitutional neutrality.

Today, Luxembourg City stands as a beacon of prosperity and progressive governance. It proudly holds the legislative branch of the European Union and continues to attract a vibrant international community. Walking its beautiful city center, one can almost feel the echoes of its storied past mingling with the buzz of modern European life.

In just a few hours, we experienced a city where every corner tells a story. Luxembourg may have been a brief stop on our itinerary, but its beauty and delicious food left a lasting impression.
