Daniel and I are very excited to be going to Colorado for my 37th birthday in just a few days. Planning an adventure with our health issues is a little bit of a challenge, but we're making it happen because we both want to live bigger. On this trip we'll be flying into Denver, spending 4 days exploring the city (we have a list below), then taking a shuttle to Winter Park for skiing on my 37th birthday. Then we'll fly home super exhausted.
My health issues make traveling more difficult, my soy intolerance makes eating out while traveling difficult, and my hyper-mobility makes traveling extremely uncomfortable. I do not want to allow my fragility to hold me back from the life we want to live. I can plan my way out of anything.
I have been in physical therapy for over a month this year to prepare myself for this trip, especially the skiing portion. I have specialized daily home exercises along with the weekly appointment so I feel much stronger already than I did in January. I have continued appointments scheduled for physical therapy when we return to keep the ball rolling towards our next adventure.
I have scheduled massage therapy before we leave and after we return, along with at least one session in Denver. I find that massage therapy surrounding any time I spend on a plane, or sitting for long periods of time necessary to stay functioning as much as possible.
When picking a place to stay for longer than an evening, a kitchen is a requirement for us. This leaves us with AirBnBs or long-term stay hotels. I need a kitchen as a guarantee that there will be food I can eat in whatever city we're staying in, but this is obviously limiting.
In Denver we were lucky enough to find a Bed and Breakfast with an efficiency kitchen! I've never stayed in a Bed and Breakfast and I'm rather excited. The only downfall was that the breakfast provided is actually by the diner next door. We've called, I cannot eat there.
In Winter Park, the lodge rooms have kitchens also. We'll be carrying food from the grocery in Denver to Winter Park to prepare, as the restaurant selection there is very limited.
I've done some pre-shopping at Trader Joe's and will be packing at least 2 days worth of calories with me. This relieves a lot of pressure on us at arrival by eliminating the need to find soy free food after a flight or first thing in the morning. I'll be packing dry roasted almonds, freeze dried bananas chips, freeze dried mango, banana chips, seaweed chips, and butter crackers. Daniel will be able to enjoy the breakfast provided at the greasy spoon by the Bed and Breakfast we're staying at.
I'm also packing things to help us stay comfortable while we adventure. For example, I'm packing three types of KT Tape. KT Tape is used to help joint stability, and I plan on wrapping myself in it mummy style for skiing. I'm packing heating and cooling pads, self massage tools, and ice packs for preparation and recovery from walking and skiing.
